Our school's dual language immersion program would like to establish a solid, leveled Spanish-language classroom library with high-quality books to help our students' biliteracy skills and academic achievement.
Almost 90% of the students at Hackett Elementary come from economically disadvantaged families. Unfortunately, these socioeconomic factors can lead to huge disparities in access to books at home. Classroom libraries can compensate by providing children with interesting books to read that vary in genre and reading level.
While the DLI programs have abundant collections of English-language books, our Spanish libraries are notably sparse. The amount of Spanish books shared by 2nd and 3rd grade is about ONE TENTH of the English collection.
