Oak Creek-Franklin West Middle School’s 8th Grade FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Team 38663 Outrageous Creators has earned the honor of representing Wisconsin at the Carolinas Open Invitational robotics tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC, May 6 - May 9. The 48 team international competition will feature teams from 28 states and 16 countries. Three hundred sixty-one teams competed in the FLL City Shaper challenge in Wisconsin this year, progressing through a series of regional and sectional qualifying tournaments, with the top 36 teams advancing to the state championship. Each FLL team designed, built, and programmed a fully autonomous LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robot to compete in the robot game and also worked to identify a problem in their community, develop a unique problem solution, and craft a creative presentation to showcase their work. Team 38663 Outrageous Creators identified a problem with a lack of safe, inclusive play space at Oak Creek middle schools and worked with local and national experts to create a design for an all-inclusive sensory playground at East Middle School. The team shared their ideas with school district administrators, school board members, and members of the Oak Creek community. Whether they are designing the robot, developing their project, mentoring younger FLL students at West, or competing at an event, Team 38663 Outrageous Creators always keeps the FLL core values of inclusion, innovation, impact, discovery, teamwork and fun at the heart of everything they do. Team 38663 Outrageous Creators is raising funds for the four-day trip to Myrtle Beach. We estimate that the team will need approximately $10,000 to send students, coaches, and chaperones to the event. Costs include tournament registration, airfare, lodging, food, team shirts and project supplies. Please help the Outrageous Creators participate in a once-in-a-lifetime educational opportunity that they will remember forever.
