Our entire fifth grade team's goal is to provide a tie-blanket and at least one book for each first grader at Westside Elementary School in Sun Prairie. Westside is a community school that relies on help from its neighborhoods to help make a difference in the lives of several children that have families that may struggle from time to time. We’d like to remind and share with these first graders the joy found in reading; especially when snuggling into a comfy blanket. Each fifth grade homeroom will be making five or six tie blankets. This will allow each of the 78 first grade students at Westside to have his/her own blanket as well as to have at least one book. We will work in homerooms to make the blankets, but we need some help in purchasing material for the blankets. It costs about $15 to make one 4 x 6 tie-blanket as well as provide a student-decorated gift bag for each blanket and book. The blankets and books are delivered prior to the first graders going on their winter break so they can have a book and a blanket to snuggle up and read with. Thank you for your support of this worthwhile service project. Waunakee Intermediate School

Intermediate students are collecting change for part of the fifth grade Snuggle Up and Read service project. The money collected will be used to purchase books for over 75 first grade students in a neighboring community. The company we use to buy the books also then donates a matching number of books to children around the country. Money earned beyond the cost of the books will be used toward the fabric students use to create blankets for these first grade readers.

Our 5th-grade students have a unique opportunity to learn about history through a live performance by the 1st Brigade Band, a Civil War reenactment group based in Watertown. According to their website, "In 1864, eighteen men from the Brodhead Brass Band enlisted in the Union Army and became the 1st Brigade Band, 3rd Division, 15th Army Corps. The 'Tradition of Excellence' that these men established more than 150 years ago continues today." We are excited to bring the band to our school in April. To make this experience possible, we kindly request your support in fundraising. We aim to raise $1000 to cover the expenses of bringing the 1st Brigade Band to our school on April 30th. Any contribution, big or small, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your consideration and support! Sincerely, WIS 5th Grade Teachers

In our 5th grade classes, we read the book The Tiger Rising, by Kate DiCamillo, which features a tiger who is mistreated and in need of rescuing. In helping students understand the relevance and to connect our curriculum to a global problem, we would like to raise awareness and funds to help the local nonprofit, Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue in Rock Springs, Wisconsin. This nonprofit has a close connection with Waunakee, as many people in the community have donated their Christmas trees for the tigers to play with! As many of the tigers surrendered are older, they have increased medical needs. We would like to work towards raising $1,500 to contribute to the vet bills of these tigers, as well as provide them with some Boomer Balls to help keep them agile! Thank you for helping bring awareness to the needs of animals in our community. If you’d like to learn more about this organization, feel free to visit their website or facility.

About this Fundraiser In light of the recent earthquake in Turkey, the 5th grade village of Earth North wanted to support fundraising efforts. Turkey is the homeland for some of our classmates’ families and we wanted to show our care and concern for the people of this region. Our village has decided to conduct a read-a-thon with flat donations or pledge-per-minute for up to 2 hours of reading. All the donations collected will go to support the established organization of Direct Relief in Turkey. We chose this organization based on the fact that 100% of all donations are used solely on expenses related to supporting the earthquake. We will hold the read-a-thon in school on Thursday, February 23rd. Donations can be made via Classmunity before our scheduled date or anytime through the end of February. Thank you in advance for supporting our service project and making a difference in the lives of our friends and family in Turkey.

We have a student in our village who moved to Waunakee last year from Venezuela. The family has shared that the school they came from was lacking many daily classroom supplies, making it incredibly difficult for the children to learn. Therefore, our classrooms have decided to collect many of the needed school supplies to send to the students in Venezuela. Last year, we were able to collect 7 boxes, but this year we are on track to double, or even triple, that amount! Please consider donating towards the cost of shipping, as it will cost approximately $200 a box. If we are able to raise money beyond the cost of the shipping, we would like to purchase some playground equipment to send along with the supplies. Thank you in advance for helping us with our service project and making a difference in the lives of others.

See, touch, smell, observe, hear, LEARN. Hands on experiences are what 5th graders at Waunakee Intermediate School are able to have as they learn about rain forest animals in May in Spanish class. Watching videos of animals is fun, but nothing like the real thing right in front of you. Your donation will help bring in Noelle with her animals from Zoozort into our classroom on May 20th, 2020.

Stand Up to Cancer reports, "Today alone, 4,754 people in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer. Progress against one type of cancer is progress against ALL cancer." Recently, several staff members in our district were diagnosed with cancer. We know cancer has touched all our lives and want to show support by wearing these "No One Fights Alone" wristbands. Each wristband will be sold for $2. All proceeds will be donated to Stand Up to Cancer. They are working hard to find "scientific breakthroughs by funding collaborative, multidisciplinary, multi-institutional scientific research teams and investigators". Additional donations are welcome.

Waunakee Intermediate School is honored to present all of our families the opportunity to pay tribute to veterans while also having the opportunity to contribute to the Badger Honor Flight program. All funds raised will go toward the Badger Honor Flight program which has historically taken veterans from World War II, The Korean War, and now The Vietnam War to Washington D.C. to visit several sites including the memorials honoring the brave men and women that unselfishly served our country. Our veterans are deserving of our thanks and appreciation for their service to our country. We are excited to see how many veterans we can honor as well as how much we can donate to Badger Honor Flight. Please ask your Intermediate School student to decorate and write the veteran's name on a star for each veteran you would like honored to be displayed. Thank you for your donation!
